Kathy Zarate
Capital City Fellow, Special Initiatives

Kathy is originally from Texas, where she attended Baylor University as a political science major. After earning her bachelor of arts, Kathy joined the AmeriCorps program, City Year San Antonio. As a senior corps member with City Year, Kathy led a team at an elementary school in addition to participating in citywide service projects. Upon finishing her term of service, Kathy enrolled at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio to study law and public administration. Kathy’s focus on law and nonprofit organizations led her to London, where she spent a semester working for the human rights and civil liberties group, Liberty. In May 2007 Kathy completed her Juris Doctor and Master of Public Administration degrees before moving to the District to begin the Capital City Fellow Program. Kathy has served as a fellow at the Office of Property Management in the Portfolio Division and in the Office of the Director. Currently, Kathy is placed at Serve DC, the Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism, where she coordinates special initiatives and works within the communications division.
